The Hampton Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated evolved from "women of vision." The Beta Kappa Chapter was chartered October 26, 1937 under the leadership of Dorothy Roles Watkins and Ethel Pannell. The membership was composed of sorors who resided in Hampton and Newport News, Virginia.
On June 4, 1951, the chapter was renamed Gamma Iota Sigma. The fist two Presidents were Rita Vaughn and Catherine T. Barbour. On October 27, 1951, a new chapter, Delta Iota Sigma, was chartered. In October 1956, Delta Iota Sigma was renamed Hampton Alumnae Chapter through a mandate from National Headquarters stating that all graduate chapters would be called Alumnae Chapters.
